If the brief is very specific, do you seek out photographers with that very style because you know that they’ll be able to achieve the look you want or do you ever choose photographers who don’t have similar shots in their portfolio but whom you know will be able to follow the brief?
If the brief is very specific then I would source a photographer with that particular style. There have been occasions I would recommend a photographer who don’t have similar shots in their portfolio but looking at the shots they do have I’m confident they’re able to do the job and I guess it’s having the foresight.
Do you commission many emerging photographers?
Yes, there are so many talented emerging photographers, it’s really exciting to be able to give them their first break. By doing so, hopefully it would open more doors for them.
How can emerging photographers (ie who haven’t yet picked up many commissions) show a broad sense of work and creativity in their books?
I think in the age of technology it’s so easy to look through websites and be influenced by what you see. I think it’s best to be themselves, be original and don’t think too much what the other photographers are doing.
