How to make a portfolio with art buyer Choi Liu
Today we met with former Head of Art Buying at M&C Saatchi, Choi Liu. Not only has Choi held one of the most influential Art Buying roles in the country, she is also regularly called upon to judge high-profile photographic competitions, including D&AD Professional Awards & Student Awards and Creative Review Photographic Annual. Now Choi runs her own successful Creative Consultation business.

I started my career at McCann Erickson Manchester. It was matter of being at the right place at the right time, after 5 minutes chat with the Creative Director, he offered me the job. After 3 years at the agency, I needed more of a challenge and decided the best place to be would be London, the city where I grew up.

“I do make a point of seeing photographers as I like to hear from them personally what they’re most passionate about,” explains Choi Liu, art buyer at M&C Saatchi. “From the meeting I would get a sense of their personality and their likes and dislikes. Before calling in portfolios, I would think about the personality of the art director and the photographer, as when they are on a shoot they need to work closely, so they both need to be on the same wavelength.”
